Our Kelowna Sustainability Studio (KSS), in Canada, manufactures and engraves our classic Pela Case and also collects and regrinds materials from our Pela 360 Program to make new products. It is also the home of our laboratory equipment and where we conduct compost testing on our existing material and play with developing and testing new materials and products. Established in 2004 and acquired by Pela in 2019, KSS employs 12 people in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Put simply, we believe in better.
Here at Pela we have a big, hairy audacious goal. We want to create a waste free future.

Jeremy is from the province of Saskatchewan, which grows the most oil seed flax in the world. After the flax oil seed is harvested the flax straw often gets burned in the fields because it is too difficult to break down before the next crop is seeded. As a young boy, Jeremy recalls seeing the flax straw on fire at night after harvest and he remembers thinking that there must be a use for this flax straw, but he didn’t know what that use was until much later in life.
He found it a little odd that the average person replaced their smartphone every 18 months, yet the conventional plastic case used to protect it would last for hundreds of years, so he thought a compostable and biodegradable smartphone case would be a great place to start, and the Pela Case was born.
Our mission to make sustainable products the new normal starts with a product that you hold everyday. Phone cases help to protect your investment (phones are expensive!) but they shouldn't be just another plastic product made with materials that could carry toxins into your home.
Jeremy did a lot of camping when he was a child and his dad always taught him to leave the campsite cleaner than he found it, so the next person can enjoy it too.
Our cases are made from flax shive and a plant based biopolymer.
We use the strongest parts of nature to make something truly innovative.

What are all the little specks?
Those little specks are actual flax shive pieces! Pretty cool, huh? Not only does this provide strength and natural shock absorption, it also makes each piece like a snowflake. No two cases are exactly alike. Also, it’s the best way to get someone to ask you what your case is made of and you can tell them all about your planet-loving case :)
What are your Pela cases made out of?
The Pela Case is made of Flaxstic®, which is comprised of compostable bioplastic elastomer and flax straw materials. Our material has been tested to be safe and free of phthalates, BPA, cadmium and lead and is verified to meet child safety standards in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Our base material meets U.S. (ASTM D6400-04) and E.U. (EN 13432) standards for composting in an industrial composting facility and has a lower carbon footprint and lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional plastic. It can also be left to biodegrade in a home composting environment.
Our core material is made of a proportion of biobased (renewable) content. We add up to 10% flax shive to the base material to create Flaxstic®, and increase the overall biobased content. Actual proportions vary depending on product and we continue to work with the best bioplastic companies to get as close to 100% biobased (renewable)content as we can. We are not there yet and we believe some biobased is better than none, and especially better than conventional plastic. #BelieveInBetter
What makes Pela so earth-friendly?
While people measure earth-friendliness in many ways and by different standards, we measure it by the way we minimize harm to the environment in comparison to traditional plastic cases. We are hyper-aware of the greenwashing happening—using eco-friendliness as a marketing tool to sell more products— and are actively trying to avoid being lumped into that category. For us, that doesn’t mean we claim to be perfect, but we strive to be better and better with every business decision we make.
From manufacturing to packaging, here’s how we hope to displace waste and pollution in the tech accessory market:
Flaxstic uses renewable feedstock (starch, natural fibres) as a substitute for petroleum-based feedstock and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic production
Our compostable material helps to reduce landfill waste, breaking down completely without leaving behind any toxic residue
Our packaging material is plastic-free - why does your case need a case? We ship our cases naked in a 100% recycled and recyclable paper envelope (also compostable) to further reduce our plastic waste footprint and single-use plastic consumption
Flax shive is an annually renewable byproduct of the flax oilseed harvest in Canada and is typically burned down at the end of each season. Using this “waste” byproduct gives our cases added strength and natural shock absorption and provides local farmers with another source of revenue
Wherever we can in the process, we use reputable local businesses and resources to help fill our needs. Not only do we love supporting our local makers in Canada, this helps us reduce our transportation of goods footprint as well as using pre-existing facilities instead of building new ones and taking up more space and resources
Our products are made ethically with fair wages and safe practices across the entire process
More than 80% of our cases are manufactured in Canada.

Our manufacturing partners in South China manufacture our Pela Cases, Pela AirPod Cases, Pela Vine Watch straps and Pela Vision Eyewear. Our main manufacturing partner in China was established in 2000 and employs 800 people.
KSS is led by Susan (Operations Pro) and Bernie (Mechanical Wizard) and they make an amazing team. Susan has over 20 years of business operation and development, analyst, consultant, entrepreneur and human resource experience. Bernie has over 30 years of product development experience from initial design, to prototype fabrication, to fabrication of lead-in injection mold tooling, as well as full production services.
Graceful End of Life
We try to mimic nature and align our product’s life cycle as close to a plant’s life cycle as possible by developing our products through our sustainability standards.

We utilize renewable resources as much as possible.
Raw materials partially or completely derived from renewable sources (plants or microorganisms) reduces our dependence on fossil resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

We test and test and test.
We conduct ongoing additional internal and external testing and compare our materials and products to international standards developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles.

How does a Pela Case feel?
Soft, flexible and a little bit of grip is how every Pela Case can be described. Outside of being one of the most protective cases on the planet, the next most important thing is how a case feels in your hands!
What good is a plant-based material if it’s not beautiful and functional? We agree! A phone case that does not protect your phone or breaks down easily is just another piece of junk, regardless of its properties. That’s why we always iterate our products to ensure that Pela Case is designed to serve you for as long as you need it

Products should go back to the earth in a natural cycle.
Compostable materials return to nature with the help of naturally occurring microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, algae) and break down into CO2, water and biomass. Compostable materials break down in weeks or months, like an apple in the soil.
Pela phone cases are especially easy to dispose of. Once you are ready to compost your Pela Case, all you’ll need to do is toss your used case in your backyard compost bin, give it all a mix, and let the microorganisms do the rest of the work or add it to your Lomi Approved cycle. If you don’t have a backyard compost bin, check with your local composting facility to see if they accept bioplastics, or return your phone case to us and participate in the Pela 360 program.

- Remove the larger rectangular plastic film.

How do I apply the Easy Wipe Screen Protector?
- Remove your Pela Case from your device.
- Clean the screen: Use the prep wipe to remove oils, dust, and residue. Let it dry, then buff with the microfiber cloth.
- Apply the nano-coating: Wipe in slow circular motions across all glass surfaces. Let dry for 10 minutes.
- Buff off the residue with the cloth. Enjoy your invisible shield!
- For optimal results, we recommend reapplying every 6–12 months, or sooner if your screen is exposed to frequent wear and tear.
Warning: Canopy cannot be used on pre-existing cracks or refurbished screens

How to apply a Pela Grip
- Clean Your Case: Start by wiping the back of your Pela case with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust or residue.
- Position the Grip: Decide where you’d like the grip to sit on your case. Center it for a balanced feel or adjust for your comfort.
- Peel and Stick: Remove the adhesive backing from the Pela Grip and press it firmly onto the desired spot on your case.
- Secure It: Apply even pressure for 10-15 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
- Let It Set: Allow the adhesive to fully set for a few minutes before using.
Your Pela Grip is now ready to provide a comfortable hold and double as a handy stand!
Loved by the Pela Fam!
No case I have ever owned for an iPhone has been such a conversation starter and given me the bragging rights I have. I get to tell everyone I have this protective (yes I've dropped my phone from about 4 feet to concrete in it, not on purpose!), stylish, and the best part, compostable! I mean what's not to like!
My little girl has dropped my phone so many times but it has been protected by my Pela case. The texture makes it kind of grippy which is good. And most importantly it’s compostable.
This was my first Pela case I absolutely love it! The feel and the look is the best. I have dropped my phone a few times and it has held up better than other cases it doesn’t scratch or damage the case at all. Most of all I love that these cases are perfect for the environment!
